An observation of the oral status and facial morphology of the children with unilateral mastication

Abstract
For the purpose of assessing the effect of unilateral mastication in mixed dentition, 18 children aged of 7-10 with side-chewing habit were observed clinically and radiographically. Posterior vertical dimension at edge-to-edge bite, condylar shape and state of dentitional transition of right and left side were compared.
The results were as follows :
1. There revealed much more posterior vertical space at the side of preferred chewing side at edge to edge bite, with 0.84 of consistency.
2. At opposite side of preferred chewing, much more deposition of plaque and calculus, delayed dentitonal transition and flat shape of mandibular condyle were found with 0.66 of consistency.
3. The younger the examine was, the less significant was the influence of unilateral mastication.
